Vision Zero and the Safe Systems Approach

Safe Systems Approach principles

Vision Zero is a goal to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all by implementing safer road systems that protect all road users. The Safe System Approach, adopted by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), provides a strategy to reach Vision Zero. This is a shift from a conventional approach because it focuses on both human mistakes AND human vulnerability to design a system with redundancies in place to protect everyone.
